Weather Underground midday recap for Friday, May 09, 2008. A strong low pressure system moved through the Appalachians and through the Mid-Atlantic before it moved out into the Atlantic Ocean. The storm's associated cold front stretched through the Southeast. Heavy rain fell and strong thunderstorms developed through the Mid-Atlantic before pressing into southern New England. There were several reports of tornadoes in northern North Carolina near the coast of Virginia that caused some damage.

A line of thunderstorms also developed ahead of the cold front in the Southeast, but were quickly ushered off the coast in the late morning and early afternoon.

A weaker low pressure system moved through the Plains towards the Mississippi Valley. Scattered areas of rain fell in the Upper Mississippi Vally from this feature.

Farther to the West, another low pressure system moved through the Intermountain West and Northern Rockies. This feature produced scattered rain and high elevation snow from Idaho through Wyoming and Montana.

The Northeast rose into the 50s and 60s, while the Southeast saw temperatures in the 70s and 80s. The Southern Plains rose into the 80s and 90s, while the Northern Plains saw temperatures in the 40s, 50s, and some 60s. The Northwest rose into the 50s and 60s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday have ranged from a morning low of 19 degrees at Berthoud Pass, Colo. to a midday high of 100 degrees at Junction, Texas.

Weather History:

Did you know that...

On this date in 1985, lightning struck a tree 150 yards away from an Alabama house. The power surge then followed the driveway to the house, blowing up all its electrical outlets. As the bolt traveled to the basement, it blew a large hole in the floor.
