... 2010 National flood safety awareness week...
Your National Weather Service (nws) invites your participation in the fifth annual National flood safety awareness week, March 15-19 2010.
The National Weather Service /NWS/ is hosting flood safety awareness week to raise public awareness of the dangers of flooding... and provide you ways to protect life and property. On an average annual basis in the United States... floods kill nearly 100 people and are responsible for damages of about 5.3 billion dollars.
Toddy's theme is the advanced hydrologic prediction service... or ahps. Ahps provides water prediction and delivery methods to serve your needs and the needs of all our partners in protecting life and property. Ahps is not just for floods... it is also for droughts and low water situations.
Ahps provides you with user-friendly text and graphical forecasts that are available on line.
Ahps enables you to get reliable answers to such questions as:
-how high will the river rise? -When will the river crest? -Where will it flood? -How long will the flood last? -How good is the forecast? -What are the impacts of the flood?
Some key features of the ahps pages include -multi-sensored precipitation information -flood inundation mapping at select locations -rss feed alert capabilities -down loadable shape and kmz files for gis users
The NWS will be upgrading the National ahps pages in the coming week. When this occurs some of the links will change. For more information on this upgrade... please reference
